Oxysept is a hydrogen peroxide-based contact lens disinfecting system primarily used for the cleaning and disinfection of soft (hydrogel and silicone hydrogel) contact lenses. The system typically utilizes a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution as its active antimicrobial agent. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a potent oxidizing agent, producing free radicals that disrupt the cell membranes and metabolic processes of a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and Acanthamoeba. To ensure safety for ocular use, the peroxide must be neutralized—commonly via a delayed-release catalase tablet—which converts the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen over several hours. This process ensures that the lenses are sterile and the solution is isotonic and pH-balanced before lens insertion.
