Overview

Oxytocin + ergonovine is a fixed-dose combination drug used in obstetrics for the active management of the third stage of labor and for the prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage due to uterine atony. The combination contains synthetically produced oxytocin, a hypothalamic hormone that stimulates uterine smooth muscle contraction via activation of oxytocin receptors, and ergonovine (also known as ergometrine), an ergot alkaloid that acts as an agonist at alpha-adrenergic, dopaminergic, and serotonin (5-HT2) receptors to induce sustained uterine contractions and vasoconstriction. This dual mechanism provides both rapid onset (from oxytocin) and prolonged action (from ergonovine), reducing blood loss after childbirth. The drug is administered by intramuscular injection immediately after delivery or following placental expulsion[1][6][9][10].
