Drug intelligence / Profile preview
OxyVita is a next-generation, zero-link polymerized bovine hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) developed by OXYVITA Inc. It is designed as an artificial oxygen carrier and blood substitute for emergency medical situations, such as uncontrolled blood loss from hemorrhage, and for ex vivo organ preservation (e.g., kidney storage). Unlike earlier-generation HBOCs, OxyVita is synthesized using a proprietary zero-linking polymerization process that forms pseudo-peptide bonds between the carboxyl and amino groups on the surface of stroma-free bovine hemoglobin molecules without using toxic linker molecules like glutaraldehyde. This results in a large, stable macromolecule (molecular weight of approximately 17 MDa) that prevents extravasation and subsequent nitric oxide scavenging, thereby reducing the risk of vasoconstriction and hypertension. It is available in both liquid and lyophilized powder formulations.
