Oxyzyme is a two-layer hydrogel wound dressing developed by Archimed and manufactured by Crawford Healthcare for the treatment of chronic wounds, including venous leg ulcers. The dressing contains an enzymatic system comprising glucose oxidase, glucose, and potassium iodide. Upon application, glucose oxidase catalyzes the reaction between glucose and atmospheric oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide, which in turn facilitates the sustained release of low-level iodine (less than 0.04% w/w). This process creates an oxygen-enriched, moist environment that supports autolytic debridement and provides antimicrobial activity. Oxyzyme received a CE mark in 2006 and is classified as a Class III medical device, indicated for dry or lightly exuding non-infected or mildly infected chronic wounds.
