Overview

Oyster peptide is a bioactive peptide mixture derived from the enzymatic hydrolysis of oyster (Crassostrea spp.) protein. It is rich in small peptides and amino acids, with molecular weights typically ranging from 400 to 1,500 Da. Oyster peptides have demonstrated multiple physiological activities, including immune regulation, antioxidant effects, anti-fatigue properties, blood pressure and blood glucose lowering effects, and enhancement of sexual function. Mechanistically, they may act as inhibitors of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), α-glucosidase, and α-amylase—enzymes involved in glucose metabolism—thus contributing to hypoglycemic activity[2]. In animal studies, oyster peptides have been shown to increase testosterone production by stimulating testicular Leydig cells; enhance nitric oxide (NO) synthesis via upregulation of nitric oxide synthase (NOS); elevate cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels; inhibit phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5); improve sperm quality; restore sex hormone levels; and exert strong antioxidant effects[5][3][1][4]. These properties make them candidates for use in dietary supplements or functional foods aimed at improving sexual health or metabolic parameters.
