Ozonated saline is a sterile physiological (normal) saline solution into which medical-grade ozone gas (O₃) has been bubbled or dissolved. This process creates a solution with oxidative and antimicrobial properties. Ozonated saline is primarily used as an alternative or adjunctive therapy in various conditions, including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, chronic infections (such as Lyme disease and viral infections), diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, wound healing support, and as an adjuvant in cancer care[2][4][5][6][7]. The mechanism of action involves the release of reactive oxygen species and lipid oxidation products when administered intravenously or by other parenteral routes. These compounds are believed to stimulate immune function; improve tissue oxygenation; modulate oxidative stress; reduce inflammation; promote tissue repair; and exert broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and molds[2][4][5]. Ozonated saline therapy is considered less invasive than direct gas injection therapies because it avoids the pain and tissue irritation associated with direct ozone gas administration[2]. It remains unapproved by major regulatory agencies such as the FDA due to limited high-quality clinical evidence for efficacy or safety[3].
