Ozonated sunflower oil is a lipid-based therapeutic agent produced through the chemical reaction of ozone gas with sunflower oil, resulting in the formation of stable ozonides (trioxolanes), peroxides, and aldehydes. It is recognized for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, parasites, and oomycetes, primarily achieved through the induction of oxidative stress and disruption of microbial cell membranes. Beyond its germicidal properties, it exhibits significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and stimulating local antioxidant enzymes like paraoxonase-1 (PON-1). Clinically, it is used topically for wound healing, atopic dermatitis, and dental conditions like peri-implant mucositis and periodontitis. It is also formulated into liposomal ophthalmic solutions for ocular antisepsis and has been explored as a dietary supplement for systemic antioxidant support and lipid profile improvement.
