Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ozone auto-hemotherapy is a therapeutic procedure being investigated by the Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica de Girona Dr. Josep Trueta for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. The intervention involves the extracorporeal exposure of 100-200 mL of a patient's blood to a medical-grade oxygen-ozone gas mixture (typically at a concentration of 40 μg/mL), followed by the reinfusion of the ozonated blood back into the patient. This process is intended to act as an adjunctive therapy to standard care, aiming to reduce tissue hypoxia, decrease hypercoagulability, and modulate the immune response by inhibiting inflammatory mediators. Additionally, the therapy is proposed to improve phagocytic function and potentially impair viral replication. It has been evaluated in a Phase 3 multicenter, randomized, controlled, open-label clinical trial (NCT04370223).
