Overview
Ozone-based eye drops are an experimental topical formulation developed by Assiut University for the treatment of microbial keratitis. The formulation utilizes nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) to deliver ozone-based compounds, which exert broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects through oxidation and direct cytotoxicity against bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials as an adjuvant therapy to conventional antimicrobial treatments to improve clinical outcomes, such as reducing ulcer size and infiltrate depth. The NLC delivery system is designed to enhance the stability and penetration of the ozone-based active ingredients into the corneal tissue.
