Ozone plasma is an investigational inhaled therapy consisting of cold atmospheric plasma containing ozone. It is being developed by the Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud (CUCS) at the Universidad de Guadalajara for the treatment of pulmonary sequelae associated with COVID-19. The therapy is administered via inhalation using specialized equipment (Fulgur Vitae Model 9000) that generates ion-laden plasma. The mechanism of action involves the induction of mild oxidative stress, which triggers antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways, primarily through the activation of the Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. This process is intended to reduce lung inflammation and promote tissue repair in patients with persistent respiratory damage following SARS-CoV-2 infection.
