Overview

p-Aminohippuric acid (PAH) is a synthetic derivative of hippuric acid formed by the conjugation of glycine and p-aminobenzoic acid. It is not naturally present in humans and must be administered intravenously for diagnostic use. PAH is primarily used as a diagnostic agent to measure effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and assess the functional capacity of the renal tubular secretory mechanism. After administration, it is filtered by the glomeruli and actively secreted by proximal tubules in the kidney; at low plasma concentrations about 90% is cleared from renal blood in one circulation. Its high clearance rate makes it ideal for ERPF measurement. The compound itself has minimal toxicity at recommended doses[1][2][3][4][9].
