Overview

p-Anisic acid, also known as 4-methoxybenzoic acid or draconic acid, is an organic compound belonging to the class of methoxybenzoic acids. It is a white crystalline solid that is insoluble in water but highly soluble in alcohols and ether. Naturally found in anise and other plants, it can be synthesized by oxidation of anethole or p-methoxyacetophenone[5][7]. p-Anisic acid exhibits antiseptic properties and has been used as a preservative in cosmetics and food products[1][5][7]. It also demonstrates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, tyrosinase inhibitory (skin lightening), and potential antibacterial activities[1]. Its mechanism of action includes inhibition of phospholipase A2[2], which may contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects. The compound is primarily used as a chemical intermediate rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
