Overview

p-Cymene is a naturally occurring aromatic hydrocarbon belonging to the class of *aromatic monoterpenoids*. Its chemical structure features a benzene ring para-substituted with a methyl and an isopropyl group[5][7]. p-Cymene is found in many essential oils, notably cumin, thyme, and citrus peels[1][5][7]. It possesses **antioxidant**, **anti-inflammatory**, **antimicrobial** (antibacterial, antifungal), **antiparasitic**, **antidiabetic**, **analgesic**, **antitumor**, and **neuroprotective** properties[2][3][4][6]. Mechanistically, it acts mainly via inhibition of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and modulation of inflammatory pathways(not targeting a single defined molecular protein), providing cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects[3]. It is approved as a flavoring agent (GRAS status in the US), and is used in pharmaceuticals (cough, bronchitis, indigestion, skin inflammation), cosmetics, food flavoring, agricultural chemicals, and as a bioactive ingredient in health supplements[2][4][6]. Research supports its potential in preventing protein glycation (diabetes complications), modulating immune responses, reducing pain and inflammation, and as a supportive therapy in oxidative stress–related diseases[2][3][4][6].
