Overview

p-Fluorofentanyl is a synthetic opioid analgesic and a structural analogue of fentanyl, first synthesized for research purposes by Janssen Pharmaceutica in the 1960s. It acts primarily as an agonist at the μ-opioid receptor (MOR), producing potent opioid effects such as analgesia, sedation, and respiratory depression. Like other fentanyl analogues, it has been associated with severe adverse effects including life-threatening respiratory depression and death. Originally developed for research, it has no approved medical use and is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance due to its high potential for abuse and lack of accepted medical application. In recent years, p-fluorofentanyl has reemerged in the illicit drug market—often found mixed with or sold as fentanyl or heroin—and has been linked to numerous overdose deaths across the United States[2][3][4][5][7].
