P. falciparum 3D7-MBE008 (also written as 3D7-MBE-008) is a Plasmodium falciparum blood-stage malaria master cell bank (MCB) developed by the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (Q-Gen facility) in Brisbane, Australia. It is a biological challenge agent consisting of a cryopreserved bank of P. falciparum 3D7-strain-infected human erythrocytes. It is used in induced blood stage malaria (IBSM) volunteer infection studies (VIS) to evaluate candidate antimalarial drugs, vaccines, and transmission-blocking interventions. The agent is produced by expanding the existing reference 3D7-V2 MCB in vitro using a bioreactor. In clinical studies, healthy adult volunteers are inoculated intravenously with the infected erythrocytes to characterize safety, infectivity, parasite growth, and post-treatment clearance, followed by rescue treatment with antimalarials such as artemether/lumefantrine or piperaquine.
