P. gingivalis vaccine

A P. gingivalis vaccine is a type of vaccine under development designed to target Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium recognized as a key pathogen in chronic periodontitis. Beyond oral health, Pg infection is implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic conditions such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease. The vaccine aims to elicit a protective immune response, primarily through the production of specific antibodies, against various virulence factors of Pg, including fimbriae, outer membrane proteins, gingipains, hemagglutinins, capsular polysaccharides, and heat shock proteins. By neutralizing these bacterial components, the vaccine seeks to prevent Pg-induced chronic inflammation, periodontal tissue destruction, and the acceleration of associated systemic diseases. Different research groups and companies are exploring various antigenic compositions and delivery methods for this vaccine.
