Overview

P11187 is an orally active, small molecule New Chemical Entity (NCE) developed by Piramal Enterprises Limited for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It acts as a selective agonist of GPR40 (also known as free fatty acid receptor 1 or FFAR1), a target involved in glucose-dependent insulin secretion. By stimulating GPR40, P11187 enhances insulin release in response to elevated blood glucose levels, thereby reducing the risk of hypoglycemia associated with some other antidiabetic agents. The drug was discovered and developed by the NCE Research Division at Piramal and received US FDA Investigational New Drug (IND) approval to begin Phase I clinical trials in healthy volunteers. Its primary indication is type 2 diabetes mellitus[1][2][4][5].
