Overview

P27A + GLA-SE is a blood-stage malaria vaccine candidate developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois (CHUV). The vaccine consists of P27A, a 104-mer synthetic peptide derived from the *Plasmodium falciparum* trophozoite exported protein 1 (TEX1), formulated with the GLA-SE (glucopyranosyl lipid adjuvant stable emulsion) adjuvant. GLA-SE is a synthetic Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) agonist that enhances the immune response to the peptide antigen. The vaccine is designed to elicit high titers of antibodies and cellular immunity to inhibit the parasite's development during the erythrocytic stage of its life cycle. Clinical evaluation in Phase 1a/1b trials has demonstrated that the GLA-SE adjuvanted formulation is safe and significantly more immunogenic than formulations using Alhydrogel.
