Overview

P2A is an oral beta-lactamase enzyme that was part of a clinical-stage program acquired by Synthetic Biologics from Prev ABR LLC in November 2012. It belongs to a series of enzymes (including P1A and P3A) designed to be co-administered with intravenous beta-lactam antibiotics. The enzyme's primary function is to degrade residual antibiotics that reach the gastrointestinal tract, thereby protecting the natural gut microbiome from disruption and preventing the overgrowth of *Clostridioides difficile*, which causes healthcare-associated infections. While P1A reached Phase 2 and P3A was developed into the lead candidate ribaxamase (SYN-004), P2A was part of the foundational portfolio used to advance this microbiome-protective therapeutic approach.
