P2G12 is a human IgG1/κ monoclonal antibody with broad neutralizing activity against HIV. It was expressed in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants as part of the Pharma-Planta project. The antibody is derived from the original 2G12 antibody but produced in plants rather than traditional cell culture systems, hence the "P" prefix indicating its plant origin[6]. The development of P2G12 represents a significant milestone in plant-derived pharmaceutical proteins, as it was the first plant-derived monoclonal antibody to receive regulatory approval for clinical testing. The manufacturing process involved comprehensive molecular characterization, confirmation of genetic and phenotypic stability over several generations of transgenic plants, and establishment of standard operating procedures for cultivation, harvest, processing, and purification[6]. P2G12 completed a Phase 1 clinical trial that was a first-in-human, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, dose-escalation safety study involving a single vaginal administration in healthy female subjects[6][7]. The trial began in August 2011[7].
