P3007 is a non-functionalized ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) nanoparticle, specifically a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-USPIO coupled with gem-bisphosphonate compounds. It serves as a control contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, particularly for visualizing vascular inflammation in atherosclerosis. Unlike its targeted counterpart P03011, P3007 does not specifically bind to vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and therefore does not accumulate significantly in atherosclerotic plaques. It is used to assess baseline iron oxide particle distribution and clearance without specific molecular targeting, primarily by altering T2 and T2* relaxation times in MRI.
