Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tocosol Paclitaxel is a proprietary, vitamin E-based emulsion formulation of the taxane chemotherapy agent paclitaxel, developed by SONUS Pharmaceuticals. Utilizing the TOCOSOL drug delivery technology, this formulation creates small, stable drug particles that allow for a ready-to-use injectable emulsion. This technology was designed to eliminate the need for Cremophor EL (used in standard Taxol), thereby reducing hypersensitivity reactions and shortening infusion times from 3 hours to approximately 15 minutes. Despite receiving FDA Fast Track and Orphan Drug designations for bladder cancer, the drug's development was halted after a pivotal Phase 3 trial in metastatic breast cancer failed to demonstrate non-inferiority to weekly Taxol in terms of objective response rate.
