Paclitaxel + pentoxifylline is a combination of two small molecule drugs. Paclitaxel is a taxane antineoplastic agent that stabilizes microtubules and inhibits their depolymerization, thereby disrupting mitosis and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. It is widely used in the treatment of various cancers, including breast and ovarian cancer. Pentoxifylline is a methylxanthine derivative with hemorheological, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties; it improves blood flow by decreasing blood viscosity and increasing erythrocyte flexibility. In oncology settings, pentoxifylline has been investigated for its potential to reduce chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (notably from paclitaxel) due to its neuroprotective effects[1][2][3]. The combination has been studied primarily for the prophylaxis of paclitaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer patients[1].
