Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Paclitaxel micellar is a Cremophor EL-free, micellar formulation of the taxane paclitaxel, developed using the proprietary XR17 technology platform. By encapsulating paclitaxel in micelles, this formulation improves the solubility of the hydrophobic drug without the need for polyethoxylated castor oil (Cremophor EL), which is known to cause severe hypersensitivity reactions. This allows for the administration of higher doses over shorter infusion times with reduced need for corticosteroid premedication. It is approved in the European Union and other territories for the treatment of adult patients with first relapse of platinum-sensitive epithelial ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer, and fallopian tube cancer in combination with carboplatin. Elevar Therapeutics acquired the global rights to the drug from its original developer, Oasmia Pharmaceutical, in 2020.
