Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Paclitaxel polymer micelle is a novel formulation of the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel, in which the drug is encapsulated within or conjugated to a biocompatible polymer to form nanoscale micelles. This design enhances the solubility and stability of paclitaxel in aqueous solutions and allows for improved delivery to tumor tissues via enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. The mechanism of action remains that of traditional paclitaxel—stabilization of microtubules by binding to tubulin, thereby inhibiting cell division and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. Paclitaxel polymer micelles are primarily developed for oncological indications such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and other solid tumors where conventional formulations may be limited by poor solubility or hypersensitivity reactions due to excipients like Cremophor EL.
