Overview

Paclitaxel polymeric micelle is a novel formulation of the chemotherapeutic agent paclitaxel encapsulated within biodegradable polymeric micelles. This delivery system enhances the solubility and bioavailability of paclitaxel while reducing toxicity associated with conventional formulations that use solvents like Cremophor EL. The drug acts primarily as a mitosis inhibitor by stabilizing microtubules and preventing their depolymerization during cell division. Additional mechanisms include inhibition of angiogenesis and platelet-derived growth factor signaling as well as suppression of anti-apoptotic proteins such as Bcl-2. Paclitaxel polymeric micelle is being developed for various solid tumors including breast cancer (marketed in some regions), non-small cell lung cancer (marketed in some regions), ovarian cancer (marketed in some regions), bladder cancer (phase II), pancreatic cancer (phase II/III), and gastric cancer (phase I/II). The formulation is also known under several brand names such as Genexol-PM and Cynviloq[1][3][4].
