Paclitaxel polymeric micelles (Aperon) is a nanoparticle-based formulation of the taxane chemotherapy agent paclitaxel, developed by Shanghai Yizhong Pharmaceutical. It utilizes a proprietary polymeric micelle delivery system to encapsulate paclitaxel, eliminating the need for toxic solvents like Cremophor EL and surfactants like Tween 80, which are associated with hypersensitivity reactions in traditional paclitaxel formulations. This technology improves the solubility and stability of paclitaxel, allowing for higher dose intensity and shorter infusion times without the requirement for corticosteroid premedication. The drug works by binding to tubulin and stabilizing microtubules, thereby inhibiting cell division and inducing apoptosis. It is currently approved in China for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and is being evaluated in a Phase III clinical trial in combination with gemcitabine for the first-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer, where it is being compared against nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine.
