Overview

Padimate A is an organic compound and ester derivative of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), used as an ingredient in some sunscreens. It functions by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) rays, thereby helping to prevent sunburn. Its chemical structure and behavior are similar to industrial free radical generators, raising concerns about its safety profile. In Europe, Padimate A was withdrawn from the market in 1989 for unstated reasons, and it has never been approved for use in sunscreens in the United States. The photobiological properties of Padimate A resemble those of Michler's ketone; both compounds have been shown to increase the lethal effects of UV radiation on cells[1][2][5].
