Overview

Padimate O is an organic small molecule that primarily functions as a UV-B filter in sunscreens and cosmetic products. Chemically known as 2-ethylhexyl 4-(dimethylamino)benzoate, it is a derivative of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) that absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the 290-315 nm range, thereby protecting the skin from DNA damage and erythema. Beyond its role in photoprotection, Padimate O is utilized as a chemical penetration enhancer in topical drug delivery systems. It facilitates the transdermal absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as estradiol and hesperetin, by disrupting the lipid bilayer structure of the stratum corneum. Recent research has also identified its ability to regulate hyaluronan metabolism in human keratinocytes by inhibiting the expression of the hyaluronan-mediated motility receptor (RHAMM).
