Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PADMA 28 is a complex herbal preparation based on traditional Tibetan medicine. It contains a blend of approximately 20 different herbs along with calcium sulfate and natural camphor. The formulation is used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of circulatory disorders such as intermittent claudication and peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Clinical studies indicate that it may improve walking distance in patients with PAOD and has shown potential benefits in other vascular conditions and chronic inflammatory diseases including recurrent respiratory tract infections, viral hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, polyneuropathy, venous leg complaints, and diabetes-associated paresthesias[1][3][4][7][8]. Mechanistically, PADMA 28 exhibits lipid-lowering activity; inhibits blood lipid oxidizability; increases fibrinolytic activity; inhibits platelet aggregation; modulates neutrophil-derived free radicals; decreases oxidative burst response of monocytes; inhibits cellular response to growth factors involved in atherosclerosis/restenosis; suppresses inflammatory cytokine production; stimulates physiological angiogenesis at low doses[1][6][9]. Its main active constituents are bioflavonoids, tannins, terpenes, essential oils—providing anti-inflammatory, antioxidant/antiperoxidal effects as well as cytoprotective and wound-healing properties[6]. PADMA 28 has been registered as a drug in Switzerland since the late 1970s. It is generally considered safe with mild side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort or skin eruptions reported at rates similar to placebo[1][3].
