Overview

Paenibacillus larvae bacterin is a conditionally licensed vaccine developed to protect honey bee colonies (Apis mellifera) against American foulbrood (AFB), a highly destructive and notifiable bacterial disease caused by the spore-forming gram-positive microorganism Paenibacillus larvae. The vaccine is composed of inactivated whole-cell P. larvae bacteria (bacterin) and works by stimulating the immune response in queen bees, which then pass immunity to their offspring, thereby reducing colony losses due to AFB. This product represents the first approved vaccine for honey bees and marks a significant advance in apiculture health management[2][6]. The primary indication is prevention of American foulbrood in managed honey bee populations.
