Overview
Paeonia lactiflora is a perennial herbaceous plant whose roots are extensively utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as Chi Shao (Red Peony) or Bai Shao (White Peony) depending on the processing method. The herb contains a variety of bioactive monoterpene glycosides, with paeoniflorin being the most prominent. These compounds demonstrate significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and metabolic regulatory properties. Clinical and preclinical research has explored its utility in treating diabetic nephropathy, ulcerative colitis, atherosclerosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Its therapeutic mechanisms include the activation of the AMPK/PPARδ pathway, inhibition of NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and modulation of urate transporters.
