Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Paeonia lutea extract is a botanical extract derived from the roots of the tree-like peony *Paeonia lutea*. It contains plant-derived heparin-like substances (heparinoids) that exhibit anticoagulant and fibrin-depolymerizing activities. Developed by researchers at Lomonosov Moscow State University, the extract is being investigated for its potential to prevent and treat thrombosis. It acts primarily as an indirect anticoagulant by enhancing the activity of antithrombin-III, which subsequently inhibits coagulation factor Xa, thereby preventing fibrin formation and clot propagation. In preclinical studies, the extract has demonstrated synergistic anticoagulant effects when combined with glutamic acid, showing superior anti-factor Xa and fibrin-depolymerization activity compared to standard animal-derived low-molecular-weight heparins.
