Overview
Paeoniae Radix is a traditional East Asian herbal medicine derived from the dried roots of *Paeonia lactiflora* Pall. or *Paeonia veitchii* Lynch. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is categorized into two primary forms: Paeoniae Radix Alba (White Peony Root), which is typically boiled and peeled, and Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Red Peony Root), which is dried raw. The herb contains a variety of bioactive compounds, most notably the monoterpene glycoside paeoniflorin, along with albiflorin and oxypaeoniflorin. It is widely recognized for its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Clinical applications include the management of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as the treatment of pain, muscle spasms, and gynecological disorders like dysmenorrhea.
