paeoniae radix rubra

Paeoniae radix rubra (赤芍; Chi Shao; Red Peony Root) is the dried root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. or Paeonia veitchii Lynch from the family Ranunculaceae. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb primarily used to clear heat and cool the blood, invigorate blood circulation and resolve stasis, relieve pain due to blood stasis (such as dysmenorrhea and trauma), clear liver fire (for eye redness/swelling), and reduce swelling from sores or abscesses[1][3][4][6]. Its main active constituents include various glycosides such as paeoniflorin. In modern research it has shown antithrombotic effects and may inhibit cancer cell growth[3]. It is typically administered orally in decoction or powder form.
