Overview

Palatal oral mucosa (POM) is an autologous tissue graft harvested from a patient's palate and surgically transplanted to another site in the oral cavity. In the clinical research conducted by Dr. Stephen E. Feinberg at the University of Michigan, POM serves as the standard-of-care control for evaluating the efficacy of tissue-engineered constructs like EVPOME (Ex Vivo Produced Oral Mucosa Equivalent). It is primarily used to augment keratinized oral mucosa around dental implants and natural teeth, providing a stable biological environment to prevent soft tissue recession and maintain oral health. As an autogenous graft, it contains the patient's own keratinocytes and connective tissue matrix, ensuring high biocompatibility and structural integrity.
