Overview

Palbinone is a terpenoid small molecule isolated from the roots of *Paeonia albiflora* Pallas. It is recognized for its potent *anti-inflammatory* activity and strong inhibitory effects on specific metabolic enzymes. Mechanistically, palbinone inhibits *aldose reductase (AKR1B1)* and *NADPH-linked 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase*, enzymes that play important roles in carbohydrate metabolism and steroid hormone metabolism[1][3][5][6]. Preclinical studies have shown palbinone reduces retinal inflammation and oxidative stress, activates the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, and inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome formation in diabetic retinopathy models[2]. Primary research suggests palbinone may improve antioxidant enzyme levels and modulate key inflammatory signaling pathways (such as NLRP3, IL-1β, and IL-18). Palbinone is currently used primarily as an investigative agent in biochemical and pharmacological research[1].
