Pale sulfonated shale oil (PSSO) is a naturally derived substance obtained from the distillation of oil-rich sedimentary rocks (shale), followed by sulfonation and neutralization. Unlike dark sulfonated shale oil, PSSO is highly purified to remove dark-colored and odorous components, making it more suitable for cosmetic and dermatological applications. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic, and anti-microbial properties. It is primarily used in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic eczema, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis.
