Overview

Palmatine is a natural isoquinoline alkaloid of the protoberberine class found in several medicinal plants such as Phellodendron amurense and Coptis chinensis. It has a wide spectrum of pharmacological effects including anti-cancer (notably via cell cycle arrest and apoptosis), anti-oxidant activity (scavenging free radicals), anti-inflammatory effects (modulating inflammatory mediators), neuroprotection (potential cognitive enhancement and MAO inhibition), antibacterial and antiviral properties. Palmatine is used mainly in traditional Chinese medicine for gastrointestinal tract infections and other infectious or inflammatory conditions. Its mechanism of action involves multiple molecular targets including DNA intercalation leading to cytotoxicity at higher concentrations; it also modulates metabolic enzymes in the liver. The main metabolic pathways are glucuronidation and sulfation[1][3][4][9].
