palmijihwang-tang

Palmijihwang-tang (also known as Palmijihwang-hwan or PJH) is a traditional herbal medicine composed of eight medicinal herbs, including Rehmannia glutinosa and Aconitum carmichaelii. It is widely used in Korean and Chinese medicine, traditionally indicated for conditions associated with "kidney-yang deficiency." In the context of modern respiratory medicine, it has been investigated for its therapeutic potential in obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The formula exerts multi-target anti-inflammatory effects by significantly reducing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly interleukin-13 (IL-13), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Preclinical studies indicate that it suppresses the phosphorylation of NF-κB and ERK1/2 signaling pathways and inhibits airway remodeling by reducing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-7, MMP-9) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β).
