Palmitoleic acid is a naturally occurring omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acid (16 carbons, one double bond at the 9th carbon in the cis configuration). It is biosynthesized from palmitic acid by stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 and is found in human adipose tissue and liver. Palmitoleic acid acts as a signaling molecule (lipokine) involved in metabolic regulation. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest it improves insulin sensitivity in liver and skeletal muscle, reduces inflammation via downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines, lowers serum triglycerides and LDL cholesterol while raising HDL cholesterol, and may reduce C-reactive protein levels. Its mechanisms are thought to involve activation of PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma nuclear receptors. Palmitoleic acid has been investigated for potential benefits in metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease risk reduction, obesity-related inflammation, hypertriglyceridemia management, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and immune modulation[1][5][6][7][8].
