Overview

Palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 is a synthetic fatty acid-linked peptide (Pal-Lys-Thr-Thr-Lys-Ser) used primarily in anti-aging skincare products. It is a "matrikine" that mimics a fragment of Type I collagen, acting as a cellular messenger to stimulate the synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. Developed by Sederma (now part of Croda International) and widely commercialized by Procter & Gamble in the Olay Regenerist line, it promotes the production of collagen types I, III, and IV, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans by fibroblasts in the dermis. Recent research presented at the AAD Annual Meeting 2026 indicates that it also upregulates genes involved in cell adhesion and tight junction formation in keratinocytes, thereby enhancing skin barrier integrity and mechanical stability. It is frequently used in combination with other peptides to improve overall skin health and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
