Overview

Panax notoginseng extract is a standardized herbal preparation derived from the roots and rhizomes of Panax notoginseng (Burkill) F.H. Chen, commonly known as Sanqi or Chinese ginseng. The primary bioactive constituents are saponins—specifically ginsenosides Rg1, Rb1, Rd, Re and notoginsenoside R1—which together account for the majority of its pharmacological activity[2][5][7][9]. These compounds exhibit multiple mechanisms including anti-inflammatory effects (notably via inhibition of NF-κB signaling), neuroprotection (e.g., reducing oxidative stress and blood-brain barrier permeability), antiplatelet aggregation activity (potentially beneficial in cardiovascular disease), and modulation of immune responses[5][6][7]. Panax notoginseng extract is widely used in China as an adjunctive therapy for ischemic stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases; it has also been studied for potential benefits in metabolic disorders such as hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia[8]. It is available in various formulations including oral capsules (e.g., Xuesaitong soft capsules) and intravenous lyophilized powders (e.g., XueShuanTong)[4][7][9]. While generally considered safe when used appropriately, it may interact with drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes or organic anion-transporting polypeptides due to its constituent ginsenosides[2][4].
