Overview
Panax quinquefolius, commonly known as American ginseng, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern North America, widely utilized for its adaptogenic and immunomodulatory properties. The plant's primary bioactive constituents are ginsenosides, a class of triterpene saponins that modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and immune cell function. Clinical development has focused on standardized extracts, most notably CVT-E002 (marketed as COLD-fX), for the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and seasonal allergies. Additionally, Panax quinquefolius has been investigated in Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials for its ability to alleviate cancer-related fatigue and rheumatoid arthritis-associated fatigue, as well as for its potential effects on hypertension and as a biomarker modulator in breast cancer.
