Pancreatic polypeptide is a 36-amino-acid peptide hormone secreted by the PP (F) cells of the endocrine pancreas. It acts primarily as an agonist at Neuropeptide Y receptor Y4. Pancreatic polypeptide regulates both endocrine and exocrine pancreatic secretion, modulates digestion by inhibiting gastric emptying and biliary secretion, and affects hepatic glycogen levels and gastrointestinal secretions. Its secretion increases after protein meals, fasting, exercise, or hypoglycemia. Peripheral administration of pancreatic polypeptide has been shown to decrease appetite and food intake in humans and rodents[1][3][4][6]. The exact physiological role in healthy individuals is not fully defined but includes modulation of digestive processes and energy homeostasis[1][3]. It has been investigated for potential therapeutic use in conditions such as type 1 diabetes mellitus[2].
