pancrelipase (Asian Institute of Gastroenterology)

Pancrelipase (referred to as pancreatic enzyme capsules) is an oral pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) used to manage pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). It contains a combination of porcine-derived enzymes, including lipase, amylase, and protease. In the PERiANP trial (NCT07211568), a specific formulation providing 25,000 IU of lipase per capsule is being investigated by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology to evaluate its impact on body weight and nutritional status in patients with acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP). The enzymes function within the duodenum and proximal small intestine to hydrolyze dietary macronutrients, thereby correcting malabsorption and improving nutritional outcomes in patients with compromised pancreatic function.
