Pandemic influenza vaccine (H9N2) refers to candidate vaccines developed specifically against influenza A H9N2 subtype strains that are considered to have pandemic potential in humans. These vaccines are typically inactivated whole-virus or reverse-genetics–derived H9N2 preparations formulated to induce hemagglutination-inhibiting and neutralizing antibodies against the H9 hemagglutinin and N2 neuraminidase antigens, thereby preventing infection or disease caused by emergent H9N2 variants.[3][7][11][13] Clinical studies show that nonadjuvanted whole-virus H9N2 vaccines are immunogenic and generally well tolerated in healthy adults, with dose-dependent antibody responses and acceptable safety profiles.[3][13] Multiple development programs, including reverse genetic reassortant H9N2 vaccines, are positioned as pandemic preparedness tools to rapidly supply strain-matched vaccine if H9N2 acquires efficient human-to-human transmission.[7][9][11]
