The "pandemic influenza vaccine + MF59-eTIV-H5N1" is a combination product consisting of an inactivated, split-virion or subunit H5N1 (avian) influenza virus antigen formulated with the oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant MF59. The primary indication is for immunization against potential pandemic strains of H5N1 avian influenza. The addition of the MF59 adjuvant enhances both humoral and cellular immune responses to the H5N1 antigen, resulting in higher antibody titers, broader cross-reactivity to variant strains, and more robust memory B cell and T cell responses compared to non-adjuvanted vaccines[6][7][4]. Mechanistically, MF59 acts by creating a transient immunocompetent environment at the injection site that recruits immune cells (notably monocytes), which then differentiate into dendritic cells within draining lymph nodes; this process boosts antigen presentation and adaptive immunity[1][2][5]. Clinical studies have shown that this formulation can induce strong immune responses even with lower doses of antigen and may provide long-lasting protection against drifted or heterologous H5N1 strains[6][7].
