Overview

The pandemic influenza whole-virion inactivated vaccine is a monovalent vaccine developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products (WIBP), a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group (CNBG) and Sinopharm. Unlike split-virion or subunit vaccines, this formulation utilizes the entire inactivated virus particle, which preserves the full structural integrity of the pathogen. This whole-virion approach is particularly advantageous for pandemic strains like H5N1, as the viral components can act as a natural adjuvant, potentially enhancing immunogenicity in populations that are immunologically naive to the strain. The vaccine is produced using SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) chicken embryos, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde and purification. It was specifically developed as part of China's pandemic preparedness strategy to provide protection against highly pathogenic avian influenza strains.
