Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Panenza is a non-adjuvanted, split-virus, inactivated monovalent influenza A (H1N1) vaccine developed and manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur. It is indicated for the prevention of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) infection, particularly during officially declared pandemic situations. The vaccine contains inactivated split virion particles, specifically targeting the hemagglutinin (HA) surface protein of the influenza A/H1N1 (2009) virus (such as the A/California/7/2009 strain). Administered intramuscularly, Panenza was widely distributed internationally during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic and was notably recommended for pregnant women due to its non-adjuvanted formulation. In 2023, Health Canada authorized Panenza as a preparedness vaccine to be updated with the relevant pandemic strain in the event of a future influenza pandemic.
